PENDIDIKAN SASTRA DAN PEMBENTUKAN KARAKTER

Abstract

As stated by Horatius, literature is functioned to entertain and educate. In terms
of educating, literature develops humanism values delightfully. When the literature
integrated in education field, especially for character building through literature, this issue
will be very interesting to be discussed further. This article is aimed to discuss the role of
literature in building the students’ character at schools. The best thing to be done by the
language and literature teachers is teaching literary appreciation, rather than teaching the
theory of literature and the knowledge on literature. Because through literary appreciation,
the students are engaged in discussing the humanism values found in literary texts. Besides
that, the students are forced to get the meaning of every single text. If the teachers have
done this activity, the success of character building will be achieved easier through the
teaching of literature.
