JEJAK KOLONIALISME DALAM CERPEN SULASTRI DAN EMPAT LELAKI KARYA M. SHOIM ANWAR

Abstract

Literature is a socio-cultural document of a nation. The short story Su Sulastri dan Empat Lelaki by M. Shoim Anwar is an example of this document. In the short story, Shoim Anwar as the author, tries to record the chaotic life of Sulastri due to the impact of colonialism. Traces of colonialism are the legacy of the colonizers and the colonized. The colonizers represent the superiority, while the colonized represent the inferiority. The traces of colonialism in the short story can be seen in the suffering of Sulastri’s family due to poverty. The poverty suffered by Sulastri’s family was due to her husband’s laziness and stupidity, namely Markam. Markam doesn’t want to work, he likes to meditate and worship heirlooms. Sulastri and Markam’s stupidity caused their family to live in poverty. This resulted in Sulastri entering and trapped in slavery. Poverty, lazy, likes shortcuts, believes in mystical, apathy, and stupidity are traces of colonialism which are depicted in the short stories Sulastri dan Empat Lelaki by M. Shoim Anwar. The traces of colonialism are still felt in our lives today.
