FLOUTING MAXIMS IN HELLBOY MOVIE

Abstract

This study focuses on the flouting of conversational maxim found in the Hellboy movie. The purpose of this study are to find out the types and the frequencies of flouted maxims. This study is based on the theory of Cooperative Principle, proposed by Grice (1975), which establishes four maxims, those are maxim of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner. The approach of this study is descriptive qualitative. The findings of this study reveal that all types of maxim are flouted, those are maxim of quantity, quality, manner, and then relation. In conclusion, it has come up with various kinds of reasons why the main characters flouted the maxim. The most frequent flouted is maxim of relevance.
