Abstract

The tradition of ngitung batih is one of the traditions carried out regularly every year in Bancangan Village, Sambit District, Ponorogo Regency. This tradition is carried out to welcome the Hijriyah new year, or in the Javanese calendar, it is called the month of Suro. “Ngitung” means counting, and “batih” means the number of family members. This tradition is a sacred event in the form of prayer together under the foot of Tengger hills by the local community with all their family members. The ngitung batih tradition has educational values contained, including the importance of religious education, the value of worship education, the value of social or community education, and the value of character education. This study aims to explain the origin of the ngitung batih tradition in the village of Bancangan Sambit Ponorogo, the procession of the ngitung batih ceremony, and the educational values in the ngitung batih practice. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The results of the study can be concluded that ngitung batih is one of the traditions of collective prayer in Baancang Village, which is carried out from generation to generation and aims to hope for prosperity, inner and outer peace, be given health and safety, and contain educational values that are beneficial for the character building of children’s as the next generation.
