Abstract

Oral literature is a type of literary work that is recognized by the community and is disseminated orally using their respective regional languages. One example is the folklore of Sapta Tirta in Karanganyar Regency which will be used as the object of this research. This study focuses on examining the function of the oral literature of the folklore of Sapta Tirta in Karanganyar Regency using a functional approach according to David Kaplan and Albert Manners. The purpose of this research is to make people understand the benefits or uses of the cultures in the Sapta Tirta folklore through the function of oral literature. The method used in this study is a qualitative description. Data collection techniques with interviews, observation and document analysis. The results of the study show that the folklore of Sapta Tirta in Karanganyar Regency has an oral literary function from a functional approach according to David Kaplan and Albert Manners. These functions are social functions, religious functions, cultural functions, and natural preservation functions. In addition, through this research one can find out the history, culture, and important parts of Sapta Tirta.
