Jimpitan is a cultural practice that is commonly carried out by village communities. There are several types of jimpitan including rice, money, and other materials. This research attempts to scrutinize jimpitan tradition in a way of building social values and mutual cooperation of Javanese society. This investigation takes place on a village situated in East Java Province. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. Interview are administered with the village headman and other prominent figures. The results show that jimpitan tradition is still conducted. However, the use of rice as the source has gradually changed into the use of money (2000 – 5000 rupiah). The analysis shows that Jimpitan can be an effective way to help the community donate to the lower class (e.g. the orphans and the poor), develop public facilities (e.g., security post, street lamps, waste management), and enrich finance skill. Besides, the tradition can heavily increase mutual cooperation of the community.
