The analysis of parents’ needs in selecting children’s stories that are appropriate to the stages of children’s psychological development is an important aspect. This study aims to provide considerations for parents in selecting reading materials for children as an effort to meet children’s needs and improve their cognitive development in accordance with their psychological development. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a library research method. The data collection technique was conducted through literature studies by selecting sources relevant to the phenomenon being studied. Furthermore, the collected data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis techniques through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study reveal that selecting stories that are appropriate for children is very important. The suitability of reading materials with children’s psychological development has a significant influence on their growth stages. Several aspects are affected, including emotional, social, language, and character or behavioral development. In addition, the role of parents is also important in selecting reading materials that are safe and suitable for children’s needs, such as educational books, stories with simple and engaging language, and reading materials that are appropriate to the child’s age and cognitive abilities.
