Preserving Jambi’s Culture Through the Game of Engklek to Improve Numeracy Skills at SDN 182/I Hutan Lindung

Abstract

Teaching numeracy in elementary schools remains a challenge because it tends to be delivered in a conventional manner, making it less engaging for students. Additionally, traditional games as part of local culture are increasingly rarely utilized in the learning process due to rapid technological advancements and the widespread use of electronic devices. The Engklek game activity at SDN 182/I Hutan Lindung focuses on efforts to improve students’ numeracy skills while preserving the local culture of Jambi through the use of the traditional Engklek game, known locally as “sekoci.” The objectives of this activity are to enhance elementary students’ numeracy skills, foster an interest in learning mathematics through enjoyable learning experiences, and reintroduce traditional games as part of the region’s cultural heritage. This Engklek game activity is part of an internship program conducted at SDN 182/I Hutan Lindung, involving fourth-grade students as the participants. The method used was a participatory and educational approach through game-based learning. The Engklek game was modified by incorporating numeracy elements such as number recognition, number sequences, and simple arithmetic problems. Data collection techniques included observation, simple numeracy tests, and activity documentation. The results of the activity showed that the use of numeracy-based Engklek games was able to increase students’ enthusiasm, active participation, and understanding of numeracy. In addition, this activity also developed students’ motor, social, and character aspects, as well as fostered an awareness of the importance of preserving the local culture of Jambi.
