Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and functions of representative speech acts used by the main character, Bu Tejo, in the short film Tilik. Representative speech acts are utterances that express something believed to be true by the speaker, such as stating, reporting, accusing, comparing, and concluding. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with data consisting of Bu Tejo’s dialogue transcripts collected through observation and note-taking techniques. The analysis is based on Searle’s speech act theory, focusing on the identification and interpretation of the illocutionary functions of representative acts within the socio-cultural context of the village community depicted in the film. The results show that Bu Tejo uses various forms of representative speech acts, including confirmation, statements, accusations, evaluations, and affirmations, which not only build the character but also influence the social opinions and perceptions of the audience. Bu Tejo’s utterances often present personal opinions as facts, reinforce stereotypes, and reflect the dynamics of communication and oral culture in the community. These findings highlight the important role of representative speech acts in constructing narrative, characterization, and conveying social messages in film media. This study contributes to pragmatics research, particularly in understanding language practices in audiovisual media and communication dynamics in popular culture.
