Abstract

This research aims to describe the self-defense mechanisms of fantasy and character stereotypes in the book Bulan Ziarah Kenangan by Sapta Arif. The approach used in this research is literary psychology, specifically Albertine Minderop's theory. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative with the main data source being a collection of short stories. The data collection technique used was note taking. The collected data was then analyzed using content analysis techniques. Based on the research results, the fantasy self-defense mechanisms and stereotypes of the characters in the short story collection can be explained as follows. First, the form of a fantasy self-defense mechanism in the characters in the short stories Bingkisan Bunga, Ikan Salmon, Renjana, and Kakek Pengekal Ingatan. The two self-defense mechanisms are stereotypes in the short story characters Fana, Renjana, Bulan Ziarah Kenangan, and Kakek Pengekal Ingatan. In the short story Renjana, the fantasy ego defense mechanism is more often found in the character Ravana. Ravana fantasizes in his world that Shinta still loves him, even though he is already married to Rama. Meanwhile, the ego stereotype defense mechanism is often found in male characters in the short story Fana. The male character keeps repeating the same story, even though it is just a dream.
